Claudia Wells left Back to the Future's sequels to care for her mother โ Elisabeth Shue took over

Claudia Wells played Marty McFly's girlfriend Jennifer in the original Back to the Future, but stepped away from acting when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Elisabeth Shue took over the role for Back to the Future Part II and Part III, with the films leaning on in-story explanations (and a wig) to smooth over the switch.
Edward Furlong lost Terminator 3 after a publicized addiction struggle โ Nick Stahl stepped in

Furlong originally signed on to reprise John Connor for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, but Warner Bros. grew concerned that his very public struggles with substance abuse could jeopardize the expensive production. He was dropped from the film, and Nick Stahl was cast as the adult John Connor instead.
Alec Baldwin played Jack Ryan once โ a contract standoff handed the franchise to Harrison Ford

Baldwin originated Jack Ryan in 1990's The Hunt for Red October, but a contract dispute with Paramount over sequel commitments โ he wanted to do A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway instead โ led the studio to recast the role. Harrison Ford took over starting with Patriot Games and played Ryan through Clear and Present Danger.
Laurence Fishburne played Morpheus for three Matrix films โ a new generation of the character went to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

For 2021's The Matrix Resurrections, the Wachowskis didn't recast Fishburne so much as introduce a different, younger version of Morpheus within the story itself, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II โ a deliberate in-universe explanation for the change rather than a behind-the-scenes swap.
Chris D'Elia was digitally removed from Army of the Dead after misconduct allegations โ Tig Notaro replaced him almost a year after filming wrapped

Army of the Dead had already finished filming when D'Elia was accused of sexual misconduct in mid-2020. Director Zack Snyder called replacing him "pretty instantaneous," hiring Tig Notaro and reshooting her scenes solo against green screen months later โ digitally compositing her performance into footage with co-stars she'd never actually shared a set with.
