He Wasn't Even Trying Out For Short Round โ€” His Brother Was

Ke Huy Quan only showed up to the open casting call for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom to support his older brother, who was the one actually auditioning. He spent the whole time coaching his brother from the sidelines, and casting directors got so intrigued by the kid giving directions that they pulled him in to read instead.

Spielberg And Harrison Ford Basically Wrote The Card-Cheating Scene Around Him

Steven Spielberg loved Quan's natural energy so much that he and Harrison Ford improvised the now-classic scene where Short Round accuses Indy of cheating at cards. Quan beat out roughly 6,000 other kids for the role, and it launched him straight into The Goonies the following year as Data.

Then The Roles Just... Stopped Coming

Despite starring in two of the decade's biggest movies before he was even a teenager, Quan found Hollywood had almost nothing left for him as an Asian actor once he grew up. By the late 1990s he'd stopped acting entirely and went back to school, earning a film degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

After graduating, Quan reinvented himself as a stunt coordinator and assistant director, working as an assistant action choreographer on the original X-Men under Corey Yuen. He later became an assistant director for legendary Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai on 2046 โ€” where he also met his future wife, Echo.

One Movie Made Him Want To Act Again

Watching Crazy Rich Asians in theaters in 2018 hit Quan hard โ€” he's said he cried every time he saw it, partly out of joy and partly out of pure FOMO watching an all-Asian cast finally get their moment. That feeling pushed him to call up an agent for the first time in decades and ask to be represented again.

Almost immediately after re-signing with an agent, Quan was asked to audition for Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once โ€” a role written by directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Quan has said he loved the script instantly and felt like the multiversal husband role had been written specifically for him.

At the 2023 Academy Awards, Quan won Best Supporting Actor and opened his speech by shouting out to his 84-year-old mother watching from home. He talked about starting his journey on a boat and spending a year in a refugee camp before ever imagining he'd stand on "Hollywood's biggest stage," calling it, simply, the American dream.

Quan followed his Oscar win by joining the MCU as the lovable engineer Ouroboros in Loki Season 2 โ€” a role offered to him personally by Kevin Feige, whom Quan had actually met decades earlier as a fellow crew member on X-Men. He also reunited with Everything Everywhere co-stars Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu on Disney+'s American Born Chinese, playing a former child actor whose career arc mirrors his own.
