Jason Statham Sold Fake Perfume On A Street Corner Before Guy Ritchie Made Him A Movie Star
Long before he was flipping cars in the Fast & Furious franchise, Jason Statham was diving for England, hawking knockoff jewelry off Oxford Street, and apparently none of it was an act.

He Spent 12 Years As An Actual Competitive Diver For Great Britain โ Before Hollywood Even Entered The Picture

Statham wasn't just athletic for an actor โ he was a genuine elite competitor. He spent over a decade on Britain's National Diving Squad, competing on the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform, and represented England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland.
He Was Ranked 12th In The World โ And Still Never Made It To The Olympics

At his peak, Statham was ranked 12th in the world for platform diving and competed in Olympic trials for both the 1988 Seoul Games and the 1992 Barcelona Games, but never qualified. He's called it one of the few real regrets of his life, saying not making the Olympics was "a bit of a sore point."
When Diving Didn't Pay The Bills, He Went Back To Selling Fake Perfume And Jewelry On The Street

With no stable income in amateur sports, Statham returned to the street trade his own father had worked, hawking knockoff perfume and jewelry to shoppers around London โ work he later described bluntly as goods that were "supposedly expensive." It's the exact kind of hustle he'd eventually get paid to reenact on camera.
Guy Ritchie Didn't Just Discover Him โ He Literally Made Statham Sell Him Fake Jewelry As An Audition

Statham got his shot at Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels through a French Connection modeling gig, but Ritchie's actual audition was wilder than any casting call: he had Statham impersonate an illegal street vendor and try to sell him fake jewelry on the spot. Statham reportedly sold him four sets and refused to give the money back.
He And Guy Ritchie Have Now Made Five Movies Together Across More Than Two Decades

Their partnership didn't stop at one lucky break. Statham and Ritchie have made five films together โ Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Revolver, Wrath of Man, and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre โ spanning more than 25 years, even with a lengthy gap between Revolver in 2005 and Wrath of Man in 2021.
His Martial Arts Rรฉsumรฉ Is Longer Than Most Actual Fighters' โ And None Of It Was For The Movies

Statham's fight scenes look real because the training is real: he's studied Wing Chun kung fu, karate, kickboxing, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (reportedly reaching a purple belt), much of it picked up before he ever set foot on a film set. Screen Rant has noted kickboxing is considered his preferred style, and it shows up constantly in how his on-screen brawls are choreographed.
He Insists On Doing His Own Driving And Stunts โ And It Nearly Killed Him On Expendables 3

From The Transporter to Crank to hanging off a real helicopter above L.A., Statham has built a reputation on refusing stunt doubles. That commitment turned genuinely dangerous during The Expendables 3, when the brakes failed on a truck he was driving for a stunt and it plunged into the Black Sea โ with Statham escaping through a window and, according to Sylvester Stallone, surviving specifically because he was "an Olympic-quality diver."
That Diving Background Eventually Got Him Cast As An Actual Diver In The Meg

Director Jon Turteltaub reportedly cast Statham as deep-sea diver Jonas Taylor partly because of his real Commonwealth Games diving background, and Statham leaned all the way in โ training with Fiji dive instructors and swimming with roughly 30 bull sharks to prepare. It's the closest his competitive-diving past and his action-star present have ever literally overlapped on screen.
