Before He Was Snapping Necks On Screen, Jason Statham Was Doing THIS Instead
The action legend's real backstory is somehow wilder than any script Hollywood could've written for him.

He Almost Went To The Olympics โ For Diving, Not Fighting

Long before he was throwing punches on camera, Statham spent a decade as a competitive diver on Britain's national team, even trying out for the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He never made the cut, but he did represent England in three events at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland.
His First 'Job' Was Hustling Fake Goods On A London Market Stall

After his diving dreams fizzled, Statham didn't head straight to a movie set โ he worked market stalls selling cheap and counterfeit goods to get by. He was later scouted off the back of this hustle and signed as a model for French Connection, Tommy Hilfiger, and Levi's.
Guy Ritchie Made Him Audition By Selling FAKE Jewelry

Guy Ritchie didn't just cast Statham on a hunch โ he wanted authenticity, and Statham's real street-trading past was the whole pitch. Ritchie's audition literally challenged him to impersonate an illegal street vendor and convince him to buy fake jewelry, and Statham nailed it well enough to land the role of Bacon in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
You Have Never Seen A Body Double Stand In For Him

Statham built his entire action-star reputation on refusing to fake it โ reporters have noted that you won't find a stunt double across his filmography, going all the way back to The Transporter in 2002. He's openly said the commitment comes from wanting every hit and fall to look real on screen.
This Commitment Nearly Got Him Killed On Set

That do-it-yourself stunt philosophy has come with real risk. While test-driving a truck on The Expendables 3, the brakes failed and Statham had to bail out of the moving vehicle as it plunged 60 feet into the Black Sea.
He Trains In Five Different Martial Arts โ And Once Trained Alongside His Director

Statham's screen fighting style isn't choreography-only smoke and mirrors: he's trained for years in Wing Chun kung fu, kickboxing, karate, and holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He reportedly even started training BJJ together with Guy Ritchie back in 2002 at Renzo Gracie's academy in Manhattan.
Guy Ritchie Has Now Cast Him FIVE Times Across More Than Two Decades

The director who discovered him at a market stall keeps coming back โ Statham and Ritchie have made five films together, from their 1998 debut through Snatch, Revolver, Wrath of Man, and Operation Fortune. Statham himself has credited Ritchie with essentially starting his entire career.
From The Transporter To Fast & Furious, He's Basically Never Left A Franchise

Statham's Transporter trilogy set the template for his entire career, and that same reputation carried him straight into the Fast & Furious universe as Deckard Shaw starting in Fast & Furious 6. The character proved so popular he got his own spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw, alongside Dwayne Johnson.
